Back in 2013 Google introduced the capability for users and developers to utilize their Google Drive account as a web hosting service, and on August 31st of 2016 Google will be shutting that capability down. Fact is that there are plenty of web hosting providers out there along with countless options for free or low-cost solutions to get your content on the internet, and Google really doesn’t need to be competing in that market also. Plus with Google Domains Google is already working with companies like Shopify, Squarespace, Weebly and Wix to offer website building a hosting services. With that in mind Google announced plans to deprecate and shut down Google Drive’s web hosting service.
In the time since we launched web hosting in Drive, a wide variety of public web content hosting services have emerged. After careful consideration, we have decided to discontinue this feature and focus on our core user experience.
For anyone that’s currently hosting their website on Google Drive Google recommends to check out Google Domains for alternative options. Otherwise the service will be deprecated as of August 31st, 2015 and completely shut down on August 31st, 2016 – at which point you will no longer be able to access content via googledrive.com/host/[doc id].
