Being based in New York City I am pretty excited for the launch of the new .NYC domain name extension. New York City real estate has always come at quiet the premium and the new .NYC domain names should give all New York City based business owners a sot at some distinct NYC real estate for a pretty decent price. Trademark holders can start their application process right now. As required by ICANN, all trademark owners must have their marks validated and registered in the Trademark Clearinghouse as a minimum requirement if they wish to register during Sunrise. Submit a trademark to the Clearinghouse at: HTTP://TRADEMARK-CLEARINGHOUSE.COM
Government and government affiliated entities will have the right to register .NYC domain names during the Sunrise Auctions starting in mid June/July of 2014. These applications will be handled through a designated city point of contact.
Domain names registered during both of these periods will incur a wholesale fee of $15 per domain name plus $20 per domain name per year it is registered for. Below you can find a video published by Clearinghouse explaining how the Sunrise registration process for .NYC domain names will work:
The landrush phase is set to be held during August/September of 2014 and will allow all businesses, organizations, and even residents with a physical address in New York City to register a .nyc domain name. Domain names during the landrush period will run at $30/domain and then an additional $20/year/domain.
Lastly the .nyc domain names will be open for public registration on October 8th. All final domain name fee’s will ultimately be set by the various registrars; the pricing above is merely the wholesale pricing charged to the registrar. Whether or not the registrar chooses to mark-up this pricing in the long run is up to them.

This is great news! I think the .nyc domain extension will be helpful for local businesses and services. The additional fee should not be too much of a deterrent, I would think. It should be well-worth the price to snatch your preferred address right away!
