There have always been plenty of myths in the world of SEO about what Google and various other search engines look for when crawling your website – and for years copy writers, bloggers, and webmasters were told to write content that is a minimum of 250 or 300 words long or else Google won’t index it, it wont rank well, etc. Most of us realized this was purely an SEO myth however I’m happy to share that Google has finally debunked this myth (albeit most who have spent any time dealing with SEO already realized this).

Google user shakimam posted a Google Webmaster Help thread asking about the ideal content length for his website, and Google’s John Mueller responded:

There’s no minimum length, and there’s no minimum number of articles a day that you have to post, nor even a minimum number of pages on a website. In most cases, quality is better than quantity. Our algorithms explicitly try to find and recommend websites that provide content that’s of high quality, unique, and compelling to users. Don’t fill your site with low-quality content, instead work on making sure that your site is the absolute best of its kind.

Now it’s important to note that we are talking about content length specifically in regards to SEO work. There are plenty of reasons why you may wish to feature longer content throughout your website. For example: when writing most blog posts it’s rather difficult to obtain a reaction from your reader in simply a few sentences, and for a blogger reactions and comments is what keeps people coming back. So while writing a short post may not give you the same amount of comments as your longer posts, Google’s sole concern is whether or not your short post was well written and got the necessary point across. So long as it wasn’t spammy – you’re good to go SEO wise.

  1. Wow! I was always under the impression that content had to be a minimum of 250 words to be indexed by Google. It’s very interesting to learn this isn’t the case!
