A few days ago Google announced the introduction of a brand new meta tag to be used for news articles – the news_keywords meta tag. The goal of it is simple: empower news writers to express their stories freely while helping Google News to properly understand and classify that content so that it’s discoverable by our wide audience of users.

Similar in spirit to the plain keywords metatag, the news_keywords metatag lets publishers specify a collection of terms that apply to a news article. These words don’t need to appear anywhere within the headline or body text. So now you can have a great and catchy headline for your article, that might not be keyword rich, however attracts visitors interest; and still make sure that Google can properly organize and file away your news articles based on the new meta tag.

So how do you use it? Simply add the new meta tag into the <head></head> tags of your article, listing the relevant keywords to use. For example the following would be used for this very article you’re reading right now:

<meta name="news_keywords" content="Google, Search Engine Optimization, Promoting Your Website, Website Promotion, Meta Tags for SEO">
