There’s been quiet alot of talk going on lately about guest blogging and what’s to come of it. Google made a clear stance against the current state of guest blogging; and the recent hits on both MyBlogGuest, and more recently PostJoint are evidence of that. All this has created quiet the stir amongst the SEO community with plenty of people advocating both for and against these penalties; and so I wanted to share my own opinion and experiences with guest blogging and explain why I completely agree with Google on this.

Firstly its important to note that while I have never utilized MyBlogGuest for the sake of sharing my own articles on it; I have had quiet a few guest bloggers submit articles for me to post on Rapid Purple – and over the past couple of years you have probably noticed them on here as they often came attached with an author bio at the bottom. If you’re wondering why there have only been a small handful of guest posts on here – this will explain it.

99% of guest bloggers today can’t write. For many of them English is far from their first language and unfortunately that becomes evident extremely quickly as you begin to read through their post. There’s spelling mistakes, grammatical errors, run-on sentences, and things that just don’t make any sense at all. Often is the case that I would spend more time re-writing someones article than if I had simply written it myself from the start.  Let’s take an example from a guest blog post that was submitted to me back in 2013:

And finally, another reason, most people don’t get ad click is they have too many ad units. Make sure there are not more than 2 unit in each page. Google recommends not having more than 3 each page. But just to be in the safe side, do not, have more than 2 units.

English professors everywhere are pulling their hair out  their remaining hair out. Bing has made it pretty clear that proper grammar is important in terms of how well your website will rank; however proper grammar and well written posts go well beyond simple search engine rankings.

Let’s go back to the example above and let’s pretend this was within the first paragraph you read. Do you feel like continuing to read through that post? No? Me neither. Now this single guest post has not only hurt your rankings; but it’s also hurt your readership count.

I don’t want to seem like this is all based on simply 1 submitted post – so let’s go find another example – this time by simply browsing MyGuestBlog’s current article directory.

The problem with your current source of traffic is that Google algorithms can easily change and put you right at the very bottom of the results pages. It’s for that reason why you have to create safety net for your site, and that’s through diversifying your traffic sources.

To me the penalties make perfect sense. The majority of the content featured on guest blog networks isn’t written for the sake of creating relevant and exciting new content; it’s written in an attempt to get 2-3 links onto someones website – and I think we can do just fine without those posts.

  1. I couldn’t have said it better myself. I’m thankful Google’s finally taking a stand against all of this spam blogging going around.

  2. i hate it win people dont use correct spelling and grammur in they’re posts its not that hard to cheque what you write and make sure you did it good.

  3. I occasionally let guest blogger contribute on my website but I also review the content. It’s good to have diversity of people linking to you and sharing your blog but you can’t make sure all the time. Bad content and bad links may hurt your website and may ruin everything you started.

  4. Thanks for the support everyone.

@bsummers:disqus I completely agree in the benefits of having a diverse collection of writing styles and content on your website – and I understand that guest blogging greatly helps in making that happen; however all of these guest blog networks aren’t providing worthwhile content nor worthwhile bloggers. So while you might get into guest blogging (as a publisher) with the best of intentions – you end up doing more harm than good.

  5. Agreed. The guest blogging backlink strategy has gotten out of control for exactly the reason you listed: They can’t write! I am in support of Google’s decision here too. It’s about time.

  6. Just for a general comment about guest bloggers, I have to say that they really can put me off a website. I really, really enjoy reading all types of blogs but I’m finding these days that so many blogs are over-saturated with more guest posts than those from the person or people who created and manage the website. I completely understand that bringing in people to guest posts does have its benefits, such as providing a different side to what your content is about and helping the posting schedule when the main writers may have other things occupying their time, but it really does irk me when they can’t actually write (even if what they’re writing is something I would normally find interesting) and their post hasn’t been checked before it’s been put on the website. So from personal experience, your points in this post are 100% correct and Google’s stance on it is something I can agree with. It’s becoming very clear how much guest posts are just being used for link backs and such, rather than creating a good experience for your audience, and I hope it’s improved upon in the future.

  7. There are lots of loopholes and flaws has been identified in guest bloggers writing that does not mean that they don’t have any basic skills to write against the given website. Actually, it depends on person to person. It does not seem unreasonable to suggest that better writer should find to ink something with great accuracy along with no grammatical error that could spoil the content ability to present to the readers as well as it makes a bad impression further to finish it in time. Therefore if the guest bloggers take the initiative to write anything regarding the website or any content then they should understand the whole topics along with the demand that’s are necessary in every aspects. Thanks for sharing to inform about the hullabaloos in writing nay topics.
