Starting in January of 2015 Facebook is looking to rework how often promotional content from Pages you follow will appear in your newsfeed. It seems Facebook asked a few hundred thousand people how they feel about the various content that appears in their newsfeed and determined that most people would prefer to see less promotional content and more organic content.

Beginning in January 2015, people will see less of this type of content in their News Feeds. As we’ve said before, News Feed is already a competitive place — as more people and Pages are posting content, competition to appear in News Feed has increased. All of this means that Pages that post promotional creative should expect their organic distribution to fall significantly over time.

The big concern here is going to be how Facebook will determine if you’re message is promotional or not. Facebook has outlined the following basic traits that make content promotional:

  • Posts that solely push people to buy a product or install an app
  • Posts that push people to enter promotions and sweepstakes with no real context
  • Posts that reuse the exact same content from ads

Keep an eye on Facebook’s page publishing tips and best practices site once this change goes into effect in January 2015.
