I have spoken to plenty of webmasters and online marketers who utilize Google Adsense over my years working with the Internet, and I have noticed that a common question amongst many of them is “Why am I not earning much from my Google Adsense ads?” This is far from a simple question to answer, and the answer will vary depending on the website. Throughout this article I’ll do my best to provide as much general information as possible to help everyone out.

First off, to earn a decent income from Google Adsense, your blog or website must have quality. I am not saying solely quality content (although that is equally as important), but all together your website must exude quality. The layout and design should be a quality one – so that your visitors are attracted to it. Navigation should be clean and easy to follow, and the homepage should be well arranged and organized. Think of your visitors first, and make sure that your website is as easy to navigate and use as can be. For a more in-depth look at navigation you might be interested in reading the following article: Navigation – The Key to a Better Website.

The key to earning more from Google Adsense is mainly to increase your pageviews. On average, Adsense CTR is about 0.5% to 2.0%. This means that out of 100 pageviews, an average website gets about 1-2 Google Adsense clicks. Assuming your blog gets 200 views daily and you earn 5 cents from each Adsense click, you will only earn $6 a month with such traffic – so you can see how a low traffic website is fairly pointless when it comes to generating a Google Adsense income. With this information in mind – you’re first step to improving your Google Adsense income should be to focus on generating traffic to your website and/or blog. The following articles should help you get a head start:

And of-course don’t forget that we at Rapid Purple offer you free traffic as-well, in the form of 100 free targeted visitors. To take advantage of this head on over to our Free Traffic page under Webmaster Services.

Another reason for a small Google Adsense income is badly planned placement of ad units. Many people think that wide colorful banners at the header of the blog will get them more clicks. Most of your casual visitors will actually find it disturbing, so rather than getting more clicks, you will actually start losing your regular visitors. What I usually tend to recommend is to place text ads in between paragraph of posts and at the end of posts. These gets more clicks compared to other ad units. You don’t want your ads to get into your visitors way, instead you want them to be offered as an alternative resource for them to continue reading/browsing. Google has a very well written article discussing the Best Practices for Ad Placement.

Finally, another reason most people don’t get ad clicks is because they simply have too many ad units on their website. While Google Adsense does work with some other advertising networks, you don’t want to plaster advertisements all over your website. Google recommends not having more than 3 Google Adsense ads on each page. However if you’re combining your Adsense advertisements with those from another ad network – I would recommend limiting yourself down to 2 Google Adsense ads, and maybe 1 more from the alternative network. Think from the perspective of your readers and visitors when deciding where to place an ad unit. If you were a reader, where would you like to see an ad, and where are you more likely to click? Feel free to ask your friends for some of their opinions.
