Earlier this week Host Gator announced a price increase on their Shared and WordPress hosting plans – and personally I am all for it. I fully understand that everyone wants to have a website on the internet and pay almost nothing for it – and for a long time this has been the case. However surely we’ve all heard the saying “You get what you pay for” – right? So why haven’t we been applying that to shared hosting?

On Tuesday, August 25th starting at 7:30am CST, HostGator will be increasing pricing on all our hosting packages and plans. This decision is a reflection of the changing hosting industry and increase costs as a result.

We will provide you with more details as needed but please look to our website for new pricing if you are listing any plan prices. Percentage off offers will reflect updated pricing at this time as well.

Websites over the years have become more complicated, have began to require more and more resources, and have started utilizing much more bandwidth. All the meanwhile webmasters are demanding better and quicker support. Eventually this all becomes too much for $5/mo – and then service suffers, and webmasters become unhappy. Nobody wins.

At HostGator, we believe in providing our customers with high quality hosting services at great prices. Over the last decade, we have been proud to maintain our pricing levels, even as we continued to invest in technology improvements and customer care. Unfortunately, those costs have risen, and in order for us to remain competitive and continue to invest in our business, we need to increase our pricing.

This is why I fully support the Host Gator price increase. At the end of the day the price is increasing by roughly $2 per month – and if that comes with better service and support than it’s a great deal. Furthermore this will allow other, smaller, hosting companies to raise their own pricing to stay competitive and allow them to finally break a profit – which most smaller hosting companies will gladly reinvest into their infrastructure and their customer support base – which in turn will make you – the webmaster – happy!
