Flash really isn’t doing well. First YouTube gave up Flash and switched to a new HTML5 video player earlier this year, and now Facebook has ditched Flash – also switching to HTML5. The move was inspired by a slew of things – performance, safety, accessibility.

From development velocity to accessibility features, HTML5 offers a lot of benefits. Moving to HTML5 best enables us to continue to innovate quickly and at scale, given Facebook’s large size and complex needs.

Average users will probably not notice any change – since the HTML5 video player has already been rolled out for most users on modern browsers. The change was just never made official – until now. Older browsers that do not support HTML5 will still fallback to Flash video.
