The Twitter button we’ve come to use and love has been essentially the same since 2011 and can currently be found on thousands of websites all around the interwebs – and now it’s time for a major change. First off is the visual updates which change the tweet and follow buttons from the old gradient effect and to a modern, high-contrast design featuring white text over a Twitter blue background.

Lastly there’s another huge change that’s coming along with this redesign. The Tweet button right now shows a share count which it obtains by querying a JSON endpoint – and those endpoints are unfortunately now getting shut down. That means those of you using these JSON endpoints to get a simple share count for a URL will have to swap over to Twitter’s REST API.

The new buttons should be rolled out “next month” according to the latest Twitter blog post.
