When Twitter first launched the 140 character rule fit the concept perfectly – letting users share brief and short, text based messages. However in an ever-evolving world that is obsessed with media content and visual stimulation, Twitter now shares photos, videos, polls, and so much more. As such the 140 character limit was starting to get in the way – and Twitter has came to the rescue with a new set of guidelines covering what will and what won’t be counted towards your tweets 140 character limit.

  • @replies will no longer count toward the 140 character limit, regardless how many people you are tagging/replying to in your tweet.
  • media attachments such as photos, GIFs, videos and polls will not count toward the 140 character limit.
  • quoted tweets will not count toward the 140 character limit.

The new changes should start rolling out within the next couple of months – and I expect them to make a drastic change to the Twittersphere as people are able to share more, reply more, and write more – and do it without having to worry about cutting your sentences down and figuring out new ways to express words just because your running short on available characters.
