Back in October we heard about the official discontinuation of the Vine app – at least as we knew it. Until now everyone figured the Vine app would no longer serve a purpose at all – turning into just another app that gets deleted from your device (unless you still haven’t downloaded the Vines you wish to save). Turns out that’s not the case.

Starting on January 17th the existing Vine app will become Vine Camera – allowing you to record and post 6.5 second looping videos to Twitter, or just save them on your phone. This does come with another very important change. As of January 17th you will no longer be able to download your Vines from the Vine app. They will still remain on the Vine website which will serve as an archive of all created Vines – however if you wanted to download some of your Vines and keep them yourself – you will need to do that before January 17th, 2017.

On January 17 the Vine app will become the Vine Camera. We will notify you through the app before this happens. The Vine Camera will allow you to make 6.5 second looping videos and post them to Twitter, or save them to your camera roll in a logged out state. You will not be able to do any of the other things you can currently do with the Vine app. Once the Vine Camera is live, you will no longer be able to download your Vines from the app.

Finally as the Vine app transitions to Vine Camera a new Follow On Twitter feature has been released to help your followers on Vine connect with you on Twitter.
