Microsoft has launched Insights for Office – a new tool which scans users’ documents and makes educated guesses about the nature of their search query, thus saving time and eliminating the potential of distractedly getting sucked into the vortex of search engines. The search results are then ranked in order of importance and shown to you in a sidebar next to your document.

In the original blog post by Ryan Gavin, general manager of product management at Bing, Abraham Lincoln was used as an example. Assume you’re child is writing a school paper about Lincoln. Insights is smart enough to know that it’s a report on the 16th president, as opposed to the car company, the movie, or the capital of Nebraska. Then Insights utilizes a variety of sources including Snapshot, Wikipedia, Bing Image Search, and related web content to show you an organized list of facts and results.
