Want to utilize Microsoft’s SQL server for you’re next project? In the past this meant that you would be forced to use a Microsoft based hosting platform – however this is all scheduled to change throughout 2016/2017 as Microsoft announces plans to port SQL Server to Linux!

Today I’m excited to announce our plans to bring SQL Server to Linux as well. This will enable SQL Server to deliver a consistent data platform across Windows Server and Linux, as well as on-premises and cloud. We are bringing the core relational database capabilities to preview today, and are targeting availability in mid-2017.

So far there isn’t alot of news about what features will be ported over and which will not be. We do know that there will be a cloud based and an on-premise version available. The private preview for SQL Server on Linux is available today and you can apply for a preview here. The full release is expected mid-2017.
