Cyberattacks suck – and as webmasters we have to deal with a lot of them. All the time.  From SoakSoak, to WannaCry, malware and cyber attacks have been on the rise for years. The SiteLock Website Security Report for Q1 2018 recently showed that 1% of sampled sites are infected – which sounds like a really small number until you do the math and realize that translates to 18.7 million infected sites. Furthermore 46% of surveyed website owners stated that their website was the victim of a security incident in 2017. That’s almost half of all surveyed website owners.

This is a key takeaway, because this means that there’s a lot of webmasters out there that are simply not doing the bare minimum required to keep their websites secure. According to the report, 62% of infected WordPress websites were NOT running the latest WordPress version. Something that, once again, brings us back to the importance of keeping your scripts updated. Also, while we’re on the topic of simple things you can do for added security – let me once again remind you to use secure passwords across all your logins.

The full report, which you can download for yourself here has plenty more detailed information – such as the role that social media plays in cyberattacks, and whether or not the amount of WordPress plugins your website has could increase your chances of a cyberattack. I urge you to go through the full report for yourself. However I do want to leave you with this one final note: no website is too small to hack.
