I recently pointed out that Twitter’s growth is severely behind their competition, both with their user base growth and financially. As such Twitter needs to step things up, and the new plan to help generate some revenue is to start selling pre-roll ads on Periscope videos.

Pre-roll ads are shown right before the start of a video, much like YouTube often does. The beauty of this is that Periscope users can now monetize their content, while businesses can now take advantage of a tremendous advertising opportunity. Periscope videos attract a lot of views, and getting your video ad to be seen by those people can be a great marketing boost for any business.

Ads on Periscope videos are a new way to use live and on-demand video to reach audiences at the most relevant moments. Periscope’s authentic and interactive nature brings people immediately into compelling live experiences and the conversation that surrounds them. From 360 degree and professionally-produced broadcasts to spontaneous mobile live video, stories can be shared through a range of video content.

The new ad program is currently being rolled out to select advertisers via Twitter Amplify; however it will be available more broadly in the next few months.
